CEMPD has started its career in 2002 as an independent, non-profit, public-interest organization focused on community-centric participatory environmental management.

The organization actively associates itself with the management of real-life local environmental issues and contributes effectively to relevant contemporary researches in the fields of regional/local environmental management, closely linked to social sector development and community-based people’s initiatives. CEMPD has been recognized and supported by the West Bengal State Government, Central Government of India and also by some National and International organizations in its short span of journey. The organization is also supported by some CSR projects.

“ ... the environment cannot be improved in condition of poverty, unless we re in a position to provide employment and purchasing power for the daily necessities for the tribal people and those who live in around our jungle, we cannot prevent them from combing the forest for food and livelihood; from poaching and from dispoiling the vegetation. How can we speak to those who live in village and slums about keeping the ocean, the river and the air clean when their own lives are contaminated at the source? ”

— INDIRA GANDHI, Stockholm Conference, 1972
